Country of Origin: South Africa - Developed from sighthounds also bearing the distinct ridge down the backbone prior to 1505. Large, brave dogs that protect their families and stock from wild animals and can also be used for hunting deer and feather. Also used to hunt lions.

Character: This breed is intelligent and straightforward. They are independent, brave, cautious around strangers, and learn quickly.

Temperment: Early socialization with cats and other dogs will prevent later problems. Provided they are not pestered by them, the Ridgeback is kind with children. It is somewhat reserved around strangers.

Coat: Short-haired with a strip of hair that runs in the opposite direction along the back. Color is light to reddish brown. The mask is dark.

Care Brush it periodically. When it is shedding, use a rubber brush to remove dead hairs.

Colour: Light to red wheaten

Comments: Known for his clean, quiet, and obedient nature. Works willingly and happily for owners they are bonded with, if positive techniques are used. Requires firm, fair, and consistent discipline. Can outsmart owners. ,
