Irish Setters are susceptible to gastric torsion (bloat), epilepsy and Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA). It is important that when contacting a Irish Setter breeder that you express health concern issues and ask the breeder what they are doing in order to help mimimize them.

Please don't purchase your Irish Setter from a petstore which commonly are known to support Irish Setter puppy mills. Doing so only promotes inproper breeding ethics and promotes current Irish Setter health issues. The AKC, UKC, FCI, CKC, SKC, WWKC, FIC registries recognize the Irish Setter breed standard.

Country of Origin: Ireland - Brought to USA in the late 1800's mainly as gun dogs. Heritage not clear, but it is thought that various sporting breeds form it's foundation. Considered by many to be the most aristocratic and beautiful of all the show dogs. .

Character: This dog is lively, energetic, playful, and independent. Barking is infrequent.

Temperment: This dog gets along well with children, other dogs, and any household pets, and will enthusiastically welcome visitors.

Coat: Long and flat. Should be very few curls. The color should be rich chestnut, without a trace of black. White markings are common. There is a red-white Irish Setter that is mostly white with red markings.

Care Irish Setters must be trimmed occasionally. Excess hair between the pads of the feet and under the ears must also be trimmed.

Colour: Mahogany or rich chestnut red

Comments: Fun loving, energetic companions that can be stubborn, but are willing to please once you've gained their loyalty. Their rollicking devil-may-care personality has made this dog very popular. The breed is sensitive and does not react well to harsh .
