Tibetan Mastiffs are not suited for hot climates. They are prone to hip dysplasia, skin conditions, thyroid problems, ear infections, and an unusual genetic problem called Canine Inherited Demyelinative Neuropathy (CIDN). It is important that when contacting a Tibetan Mastiff breeder that you express health concern issues and ask the breeder what they are doing in order to help mimimize them.

Please don't purchase your Tibetan Mastiff from a petstore which commonly are known to support Tibetan Mastiff puppy mills. Doing so only promotes inproper breeding ethics and promotes current Tibetan Mastiff health issues. The ARBA, FCI, SKC, WWKC, FIC registries recognize the Tibetan Mastiff breed standard.

Country of Origin: Tibet (China) - Believed to be the missing link between flock guarding and mastiff breeds. Has definitely been around since recorded history (and before). Used as guard and sled dogs in the USA, as well as family companions. Size is comprable to the Saint Bernard. Marco Polo claimed to have seen Tibetans

Character: This breed is reserved around strangers, dignified, loyal, and calm. It is very self-confident, and can tend to be stubborn and dominant.

Temperment: This dog is loving with children but is distrustful around strangers. Provided proper socialization has taken place, this breed gets along fine with other household pets. It usually has no problem with other dogs.

Coat: The coat is long and thick with a heavy underlayer. Colors can be black and tan, golden brown, plain black, or grey with or without tan markings.

Care Regular grooming with a brush is required. In the summer, its owner must spend at least a half an hour each day pulling out loose hair with a brush and comb.

Colour: Gold; black/tan; black; grizzle; sable; brown; blue/tan

Comments: Intelligent, hardy, active and quite trainable. Sound, sweet temperaments. Good companions to children. Used for agility, herding, obedience and conformation. Length in proportion to height is 3 to 2. Generally need only a bit of combing every few .
