The hairless chinese crested is alergic to lanolin and wool. It should also be protected by sunscreen when outside. The hairless variety is also prone to losing teeth. These problems do not occur in the powderpuff chinese crested variety. It is important that when contacting a Chinese Crested breeder that you express health concern issues and ask the breeder what they are doing in order to help mimimize them.

Please don't purchase your Chinese Crested from a petstore which commonly are known to support Chinese Crested puppy mills. Doing so only promotes inproper breeding ethics and promotes current Chinese Crested health issues. The AKC, UKC, FCI, CKC, SKC, WWKC, FIC registries recognize the Chinese Crested breed standard.

Country of Origin: China/Africa - likely first developed in Africa - the breed enjoyed a brief stay in the AKC Misc. class and was exhibited at Westminster in 1885. After several decades, the breed resumed competition in Misc. classes again in 1986. .

Character: Although cautious of people they do not know, they are playful, sensitive, and high-spirited.

Temperment: This dog gets along well with children (provided they do not disturb it in its own territory), other dogs, and any household pets.

Coat: There are two varieties. One only has hair on its head, ears, tip of its tail, and feet. The other, known as the Powder Puff, has an undercoat and a silky topcoat.

Care The skin must be cared for with lotion and exfoliating creams. The hairless variety must kept out of the sun or protected by sunscreen. The Powder Puff must be brushed occasionally and washed often.

Colour: Skin from pink to black, mahogany, blue, lavender or copper, solid or spotted; Powderpuff - any color or combination

Comments: Very affectionate, more likely to become attached to one person in the household. Loves to go for walks and run. Very calm when at home. Needs to wear sweaters in cold weather. .
