Country of Origin: Malta - National Dog of Malta - Probably one of the original domestic dogs. Phoenicians brought these dogs to Malta in 1000 BC where they bred true for almost 2,000 years. Brought to Britain in the 1930's, to America in 1960's, and recognized in Canada in 1979 and in America in 1983. Called Pharoah Hound because of its resemblance to artistic reproductions of the dog god Anubis.

Character: This dog is loyal, affectionate, playful, brave and calm. It has a very strong hunting instinct.

Temperment: Pharoah Hounds are somewhat wary around strangers. They get along well with children. They can be rather dominant around other males. Early training is necessary in order for the Pharoah Hound to learn to live with the family cat.

Coat: Color is various shades of reddish-brown. White markings on the feet and chest, as well as a small white blaze are permissible. A white tip to the tail is desirable.

Care This breed is very low-maintenance when it comes to grooming. A rubber brush should be used to remove dead hairs.

Colour: Tan, rich tan, or chestnut w/white tip on tail and white on chest, toes, face

Comments: Has the unusual ability to hunt by both scent and signt. Needs lots of exercise. .
