Country of Origin:
Germany - Developed as a cattle herder - Used from the 15th century - Also used as guard dogs in towns. Thought to have originated in Bavaria near Munich, it was called the Muenchener, going back to the late 1800's when it was developed from the Standard Schnauzer. Introduced to dog shows in Munich in 1909. Local herding dogs probably contributed to their size and later black Great Danes added size and substance. Later used for guarding, it became an excellent police and military dog.
Character:
This breed is alert, watchful and does not like to wander. It bonds closely with its family.
Temperment:
This dog gets along well with children, other dogs, and any household pets. It tends toward shyness around strangers.
Coat:
The usual color is salt-and-pepper. a dark face is desirable.
Care
Coat must be plucked twice yearly. Excessive hair in feet pads and in the ears must be trimmed. Long hairs around the face must be combed occasionally.
