The Scottish Terrier is susceptible to flea allergy, Von Willebrand's disease and skin problems. It is important that when contacting a Scottish Terrier breeder that you express health concern issues and ask the breeder what they are doing in order to help mimimize them.
Please don't purchase your Scottish Terrier from a petstore which commonly are known to support Scottish Terrier puppy mills. Doing so only promotes inproper breeding ethics and promotes current Scottish Terrier health issues. The AKC, UKC, FCI, CKC, SKC, WWKC, FIC registries recognize the Scottish Terrier breed standard.

Country of Origin:
Great Britain - First record stems from 1859 - Most probably closely related to West Highland White Terrier. First club organized and standard drawn in 1881. As forerunner to the present day Scottie, it was given the name Introduction of firearms reduced need for them. Breed was saved by McNeill Clan who reestablished their role in 1800's. Brought to North America in the late 1800's, Standard set in 1892. Nine entered at the 1st Westminster Kennel Club Show in 1877.
Character:
Scotties become very attached to their family, are watchful, noble, and sporty, and think for themselves.
Temperment:
The dog is naturally inclined to get along with other pets. Scotties are good with children, provided that the children treat them with kindness
Coat:
The hair on the coat is wiry and hard. Colors can be plain black, black with highlights, and wheat.
Care
The coat needs to be professionally hand-plucked biannually. The chest, legs, and head are normally clipped. Regular grooming with a brush and comb is required.
