The Mastiff is susceptible to hip and elbow dysplasia, bloating, PRA, ectropion, CHD, gastric torsin, PPM and cardiomyopathy. It is important that when contacting a Mastiff breeder that you express health concern issues and ask the breeder what they are doing in order to help mimimize them.
Please don't purchase your Mastiff from a petstore which commonly are known to support Mastiff puppy mills. Doing so only promotes inproper breeding ethics and promotes current Mastiff health issues. The AKC, UKC, FCI, CKC, SKC, WWKC, FIC registries recognize the Mastiff breed standard.

Country of Origin:
Great Britain - Depicted in bas reliefs about 2200 BC; most likely descended from the ancient Tibetan Mastiff. Also known as the Old English Mastiff. Brought to England by Phoenicians. Used against lions and bears in blood sports and to hunt wolves. Interest in the breed dropped during the war years, with only 8 Mastiffs of breeding age left in all of Britain in 1945. Recognized in USA in 1941 where there are now more Mastiffs than in Britain.
Character:
The Mastiff will rarely bark, but will defend its territory and family. This breed is confident, dignified, and gentle-natured.
Temperment:
Mastiffs are usually good with children, and if properly socialized, they get along fine with other dogs and household pets.
Coat:
Coat is short-haired. Can be silver, yellow, apricot, or streaked.
Care
As with all very large dogs, the Mastiff needs a soft place to lie down to avoid pressure marks. Extra attention should be paid to his nutritional needs. Dead and loose hairs should be removed with a rubber brush when the dog is shedding.
