Eventually almost extinct after Mao Tse-Tung banned dogs in China in the late 1940's. Revived by breeder Matgo Law in Hong Kong in the late 1960's, then brought to the US in early 70's when the breed numbers increased rapidly. Originally called the Chinese Fighting Dog. Accepted as a breed by AKC in 1994.

Character: This dog is brave, loyal, dominant and not always the most obedient.

Temperment: The Shar-Pei bonds quickly with its family, but is not unfriendly toward strangers. It is fine with children and gets along with other household pets, provided socialization has taken place at a young age. It sometimes fights with other dogs.

Coat: There are two varieties. Both have very hard coats. The horsecoat variety's coat is short and bristly. The brushcoat variety has longer hair. The brushcoat is considered inferior to the horsecoat variety.
