Country of Origin:
China - Tomb statues during Han Dynasty 210 BC appear to indicate ancestoral evidence of Shar-Pei. Once used for hunting boar, wild animals, and fighting. Eventually almost extinct after Mao Tse-Tung banned dogs in China in the late 1940's. Revived by breeder Matgo Law in Hong Kong in the late 1960's, then brought to the US in early 70's when the breed numbers increased rapidly. Originally called the Chinese Fighting Dog. Accepted as a breed by AKC in 1994.
Character:
This dog is brave, loyal, dominant and not always the most obedient.
Temperment:
The Shar-Pei bonds quickly with its family, but is not unfriendly toward strangers. It is fine with children and gets along with other household pets, provided socialization has taken place at a young age. It sometimes fights with other dogs.
Coat:
There are two varieties. Both have very hard coats. The horsecoat variety's coat is short and bristly. The brushcoat variety has longer hair. The brushcoat is considered inferior to the horsecoat variety.
Care
The characteristic folds of skin that cover its entire body must be checked and cleaned regularly. The coat must be groomed with a soft brush.
Colour:
Fawn (most common), black, red, apricot, cream, blue, sable, cream dilute, apricot dilute, 5-pt red (dilute points)
